Manuel Illescas


Manuel began his professional career in the world of biomedical research where he was granted several scholarships throughout the course of his doctorate.

Manuel subsequently joined the body of Spanish Patent and Trademark Office graduates by open examination, where he practiced as an examiner for 8 years.

In 1993 Manuel joined the firm Elzaburu, which he left in 2007 as a Senior Partner. At that point González-Bueno & Illescas was founded, which in 2013 became MIA.

Manuel serves as a regular speaker at seminars and frequently lectures on industrial property and innovation. He has combined his experience in the world of intellectual property with his interest in research projects in the field of biotechnology through engagement as a shareholder and advisor in several seed capital companies such as Inverbio (2005) and Cross Road Biotech (2007), and as a science director in other companies such as SJT Molecular Research (2013).

Manuel is a member of several organizations and associations, including the Colegio Oficial de Agentes de la Propiedad Industrial de España, the Colegio Oficial de Biólogos de España, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI), Asociación de Agentes Españoles autorizados ante Organizaciones Internacionales de Propiedad Industrial e Intelectual (AGESORPI), American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (EPI).

Jose began his professional career at Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas-CSIC in the biosciences and visited two centers in the United States (National Institutes of Health and Duke University Medical Center).

He joined Círculo de Innovación en Biotecnología and carried out competitive intelligence reports related to the biomedical technology. Subsequently, he worked as knowledge transfer manager at CSIC.

Jose joined the IP law firm Clarke, Modet & Cº España in 2010 and worked as patent consultant for 7 years. He joined MIAPatents in 2017.

He has extensive experience in patent drafting and prosecution of European and Spanish patent applications, PCT international applications, and diverse foreign patent applications, patentability reports, infringement reports and prosecution of Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPC). He specializes in inventions of diverse fields, such as biotechnology, pharmacy, agrochemistry, chemistry, cosmetics, veterinary, petrochemistry, metallurgy, nanotechnology and material science.

He was speaker at webinars, seminars and intellectual property courses. He drafted articles for intellectual property journals.

Jose is a member of Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (EPI) and Colegio Oficial de Químicos de Madrid.

Gwion Harfoot

Gwion joined MIA in 2012 where he specializes in inventions of a chemical-pharmaceutical and biotechnological nature. His work includes patent drafting, due diligence studies into patentability, infringement and freedom-to-operate, as well as prosecuting applications before the European Patent Office, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, and the World Industrial Property Organization within the framework of the Patent Cooperation Treaty, amongst other patent offices.

Gwion Harfoot


Gwion began his training in industrial and intellectual property while working in a German firm based in Munich, after holding an Alexander von Humboldt post-doctoral fellowship at the RWTH Aachen University in Aachen, Germany. He is the author of numerous scientific publications in high impact journals and has presented his work at various international conferences.

Raquel López started her professional career in R&D, working at Procter & Gamble (Belgium), in the areas of photochemistry and detergents, and at Quest Intl. (The Netherlands) in the field of food ingredients. In 2013, Raquel succeeded in passing the USPTO Patent Bar Examination, and started working at a Patent firm in California.

She started working with MIA Patents in 2015, where her work includes patent drafting, as well as prosecuting applications before the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), the European Patent Office (EPO), and the World Industrial Property Organization (WIPO) within the frame of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), amongst other national patent offices.

Victoria Chapa

She began his professional career at the Legal Department in Heinemann Distributor (Reed Elsevier) and took part in the foundation of the publishing house in Spain. Since then she specialized in publishing, management and Intellectual Property, mainly in copyright.

She has been assistant editorial manager at Heinemann Iberia; editorial manager at Alfaguara juvenil; editorial manager at Altea; editorial manager at Punto de Lectura (all companies pertaining to Santillana Publishing Group); general manager at Suma de Letras.

She has given numerous lectures on copyright; she still advises and manages independent authors´ contracts.

Currently she leads the cultural area of the company Unomasdós and manages Letras Redondas. She collaborates with various companies in writing and editing reports, contracts and other business documents; she works as MIAPatents´ off-counsel for Intellectual Property.

Luigi Carlini


Luigi began his professional career in 2002 following a one-year full experience as Trademark Legal Assistant at the OHIM’s Third Board of Appeal based in Alicante, Spain thus joining the Spanish branch of the Italian Law Firm Jacobacci & Partners as Associate Lawyer in charge of its Trademarks & Designs Department. He has been in charge during more of 13 years of portfolios of well-known national and international companies, many of them reputed in the fashion, IT, media, retail, real estate and healthcare fields. He has been handling negotiations with third parties in case of conflictive matters and, in the absence thereof, pursuing actions before the competent authorities on their behalf. He has been working with a wide network of associates worldwide seeking protection of the clients’ IP rights internationally.

In 2015 Luigi started his own professional business based on his client portfolio which currently includes several national and international companies seeking to protect and defend their industrial property rights worldwide. Besides, he fully collaborates as Of-Counsel Attorney with our Firm as far as any Trademarks & Designs matter is concerned.

Luigi has been acting as lecturer and assistant at the Magister Lvcentinvs Master, University of Alicante, Spain.
